VISION STATEMENT
The
vision of The University of the West Indies, Medical Sciences
Library is that during the next five years:
The
Medical Sciences Library as an integral component of the
University Libraries system, in accordance with its mission
and values, will emerge as a team-based, environment-friendly,
customer service-oriented, entrepreneurial, knowledge-based,
and progressive component of the Faculty of Medical Sciences,
St Augustine, and as a strategic resource within the
University of the West Indies, the Nation of Trinidad and
Tobago, and the Caribbean Region.
MISSION
STATEMENT
The
central purpose and role of The University of the West Indies,
Medical Sciences Library is defined as follows:
The
Medical Sciences Library encourages the growth and development
of its staff, provides efficient and timely access to
competitive, relevant and accurate information to its clients,
and contributes proactively to the teaching and learning
enterprise of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The mission is
realized through the development and leveraging of technology
and staff expertise in the selection, acquisition, processing,
preservation and dissemination of multi-faceted physical and
virtual information resources, and in the provision of
excellent access, reference, research and instructional
services.

GENERAL
INFORMATION
The Medical Sciences Library is located centrally in the Faculty of Medical Sciences,
The University of the West
Indies at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex,
Champs Fleurs, Trinidad and Tobago.
THE FACILITY The Library has a total floor area of 3,000 square metres, located on one level, with seating for 270. Special facilities include 4 seminar rooms as well as an audio-visual group-viewing room, each with seating for twenty-five (25) persons. There is also a Training Room equipped to facilitate activities related to the Library’s Information Literacy Programme.
STOCK 34,850 books, 536 current journal and 2 newspaper subscriptions, 6,900 bound serial volumes, electronic resources, over 1,100 multimedia items. The collection is classified according to the US National Library Medicine Classification (NLM) scheme. There are 2 special collections: (1) West Indian Medical Collection; (2) PAHO Collection.
CLIENTELE There are approximately 2,359 registered users, which include Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) and other UWI staff/ students, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) staff, private healthcare practitioners, special groups and institutions.
MEDCARIB NETWORK The MEDCARIB database is a
cooperative product of the English-speaking Caribbean
countries participating in the MEDCARIB Network and
coordinated by the Regional Coordinating Centre for the
project located at the Medical Library, The University of the
West Indies, Mona Campus in Jamaica. The database contains
bibliographic citations of Health Science Literature produced
in the English-speaking Caribbean. MEDCARIB covers
health-related literature, which is produced by Caribbean
authors, published regionally or pertinent to the Caribbean.
Entries include books, chapters of books, journals, theses,
official publications, conference papers, projects and
technical reports. The objectives of the network are to
enhance the capability of the English-speaking countries to
collect, organize and index health-related literature in the
participating countries; increase cooperation and resource
sharing in the region and to create a database of health
literature in the region. Documents, which satisfy the
selection criteria, are indexed for inclusion in the local and
regional databases. These materials are the English-speaking
Caribbean’s contribution to the LILACS database, which is a
cooperative product of the Latin American and Caribbean Health
Sciences Information System.
