Library Services for Visually Impaired Persons

The Alma Jordan Library has acquired hardware and software to facilitate the provision of services to blind and visually-impaired students. Referred to as assistive or adaptive technologies, these hardware and software systems are helping the Library to move closer to our goal of ensuring that information is accessible to all.

Adaptive Equipment and Software
Visually-impaired students will be able to use the equipment to check e-mail and surf the internet or log in to online courses and other information resources that they require.

The following equipment and range of software packages have been set up for use in Room 228/229 on Floor II of the Alma Jordan Library . Anybody requiring access to this room must make a request through the member of staff on duty at the Help Desk or call at 662-2002 ext 2132


JAWS for Windows Professional Screen reading software
The JAWS v 7.0 speech synthesizer software and hardware, reads computer screen text and is used for applications such as word processing, etc. A network connection allows individuals to use JAWS to conduct searches of the library’s catalogue or other online systems.

FS Reader Digital Talking Book Reader Software for reading DAISY formatted documents
DAISY is a new standard for the formatting of electronic books, and it stands for Digital Accessible Information System. This new standard permits everyone, especially people who are blind; vision impaired or have another print disability experience to read.

A Kurzweil 1000 Personal Reader
This reader scans and reads printed material. Scanned material can also be saved to disk for use in a variety of output options (including regular or large print, Braille, or synthetic speech).

Focus 40 - 40 cell refreshable Braille Display
A refreshable Braille display is a piece of hardware that provides Braille output from a computer. The user can read or select a block of text, page up or down, or move to the beginning or end of a document.

Tiger Max - Graphic Braille embosser
This machine converts text to braille.

Scanner with document feeder
This equipment works with Kurzweil software to scan hardcopy materials, including legal size documents, into computer for blind or visually impaired user . This scanner also allows scanned documents to be read by the computer back to the user.
